Robert Mapplethorpe: ParrotTulips, 1988

Robert Mapplethorpe, who was born in 1946 and passed away in 1989, is one of the few artists who truly deserve to be known far beyond the borders of the art world. Mapplethorpe dominated photography in the late twentieth century and paved the way for the recognition of photography as an art form in its own right; he firmly anchored the subject of homosexuality in mass culture and created a classic photographic image, mostly of male bodies, which found its way into commercial photography.

  1. This was a tough first act to follow, but if anything, the second part of her creative life has been richer, more inspired, and continues to be even more productive.
Nice post, I’m waiting for the next post…

  2. Google is strange sometimes, I went online looking for UK holiday recommendations and ended up here!

  3. I am new to this forum and want to say hello to all of you, it is really fantastic place to share own expirience, I will stay here for a longer. Many interesting topics. (:

  4. OH! I absolutely LOVE the NRW Forum in Düsseldorf, it is one or my favourite museums. Did you take the guided tour as well? Every Friday after 18:00 you pay half the normal entrance price, and every Friday at 21:00 (9 PM)there is an english tour, free of charge (you do need to pay the entrance of course, but the tour doesn’t cost anything extra). It adds so much to the experience when you take the tour, I have seen it several times – and I also went back after finishing the book Just Kids by Patty Smith, about her life with Mapplethorpe. Yet an extra dimension added!
Now there isn’t much time left until the tour ends unfortunately – but I will return to NRW Forum for the next exhibition too. Love that place, always something interesting going on. Last years absolute favourite, as far as I am concerned, was Albert Watson, and the year before it was “Radical Advertising”.
