IT’s Three Key Organizational Transformations – Andrew McAfee – Harvard Business Review.

My last few posts have looked at the huge levels of IT spending throughout the economy, and the fact that we spend more and more on digital gear over time even as it keeps getting cheaper. Now I want to take up the question of why? Why is about 1/3 of total spending on fixed assets every year going to IT? What are businesses doing with all that hardware and software?

I see companies in all industries using computers to accomplish three broad and deep transformations: they’re becoming more scientific, more orchestrated, and more self-organizing. None of these is complete yet, and I doubt that they ever will be
